Although this simply isn't true (Mercator wasn't ready), the legendary cartographer did complement Ortelius for the “care and elegance” he had put into the Theatrum. He was a notable figure of this school in its golden age and an important geographer of Spain during the age of discovery. Along with Gemma Frisius and Gerardus Mercator, Ortelius is generally considered one of the founders of the Netherlandish school of cartography and geography. In fact, popular sentimental legend has it that Mercator delayed publication of his own work so that his younger friend's would appear first.
